Nonoxinol 9 is a spermicidal contraceptive, it acts by killing sperm. This medicine is used along with other methods of contraception such as vaginal diaphragm or cap.
Use Nonoxinol 9 as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not use more or less than instructed by your doctor.
This medicine is available as a gel, film, foam, or sponge.
If you have been given the gel or foam, follow these steps:
- Wash your hands thoroughly.
- Remove the applicator from the wrapper.
- Fill the applicator with the prescribed amount of gel or foam.
- Lie on your back with both knees bent and legs apart.
- Gently insert the applicator into the vagina, only as far as it will comfortably go.
- Push the plunger to release the gel/foam.
If you are using the gel with a diaphragm, with clean hands, apply prescribed amount of gel onto dome of the diaphragm and spread around the edge using fingertips prior to inserting.
If you are using the gel with a cap, with clean hands, fill

3 of the cap with Nonoxinol 9 and onto the groove between dome and the rim prior to inserting.
If you have been given the film, wash your hands thoroughly and insert the film deep into the vagina.
If you have been given the sponge, follow these steps:
- Wash your hands thoroughly.
- Wet the sponge thoroughly with clean water. Squeeze gently until very sudsy.
- With the dimple side inside, fold the sponge. With the string loop on the bottom end, insert sponge deep into the vagina.
Do not use Nonoxinol 9 if you ever had an allergic reaction (e.g. rashes, breathlessness, swollen eyes) to this medicine or any of its ingredients.
Alert your doctor if you are paraplegic or quadriplegic (conditions that cause a loss of sensation or paralysis in parts of the trunk to the limbs) as Nonoxinol 9 may not be suitable for you.
Inform your doctor if you are using any contraceptive device.
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Nonoxinol 9 does not lower the risk of getting HIV or any other sexually transmitted diseases. Ensure that you use proper precautions to avoid getting these diseases.
Nonoxinol 9 may cause any of the following side effects: vaginal or penile pain, discomfort, itching, burning, rash, or redness.
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
Avoid alcohol.
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
